Diamonds are Forever!

Our 60th Anniversary Ice Gala was a night to remember. Pictured above are the club’s senior skaters who performed the opening number of the night: “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend!”

All of our club skaters and our coaches worked together very hard to provide an excellent evening of entertainment for the over 400 people who attended. It was nice to see many club alumni at the show and the Ice Men, our guest skaters, were a huge hit with the audience. The club would like to extend a special note of thanks to all of our skaters’ families. We couldn’t have done it without your interest and involvement!

Congratulations to all on a very successful event and many thanks to all of those businesses, organizations and individuals who so generously sponsored the Gala. We appreciate your fantastic support.

Skating Volunteers are Diamonds in the Rough
The Collingwood Skating Club Welcomes Another Shining Group of Program Assistants

As the Collingwood Skating Club prepares to open for its 60th season, only one thing gleams brighter than the ice at the Eddie Bush Arena: the Program Assistants. Tonight, September 17 at 4:00 p.m., 20 student volunteers hit the ice to help their fellow skaters shine.

The Collingwood Skating Club Program Assistants truly represent the diamond standard of volunteers. Every week, this group of young skaters devote hours of their time to assisting younger skaters in their lessons. Beginning with a pre-season skating clinic, the Program Assistants develop effective teaching techniques, such as skill demonstrations, the importance of fully devoting their attention to younger skaters, and how to support the Club coaches. Their training encourages them to act as positive role models and knowledgeable instructors for their peers, championing responsibility, attentiveness, responsiveness and respect.

The Program Assistants focus their efforts on the Collingwood Skating Club’s CanSkate program. Designed as a national learn-to-skate program, CanSkate emphasizes fun, participation, challenge and achievement. Alongside the Club’s coaches, the Program Assistants support skaters through fundamental skill building, from stopping and turning to balance and power.

“We are so proud to have such an impressive group of skaters involved in our club,” says Stephen Gill, Collingwood Skating Club Executive President. “In our diamond season, we feel our Program Assistants truly represent 60 years of outstanding skating achievements.”

Diamond Days Are Drawing Near
The Collingwood Skating Club Calls for Registration

Everyone can feel like a million bucks this winter with the Collingwood Skating Club. At the Eddie Bush Arena on Saturday September 18 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and Wednesday September 29 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. skaters will have the opportunity to sign up for the Club’s diamond anniversary season.

To celebrate their 60th year, the Club is expanding its programming to suit skaters of all age, skill level, and ambition. CanSkate, the national learn-to-skate program, teaches beginner skaters fundamental skating movements and skills while emphasizing fun, participation, challenge and achievement. CanPOWERSkate is an action-packed, high-energy instructional power skating program that provides skaters skills, techniques and conditioning, such as stick handling, positioning and specific game skills. StarSkate allows skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills at the intermediate and senior levels. Special needs programming allows skaters with an intellectual disability to participate in Skate Canada programs. The Club is also introducing an adult Learn-to-Skate and an adult POWERSkate program, providing them an opportunity to learn new skills, participate in recreational activities, and improve their on-ice conditioning.

All Collingwood Skating Club programs are certified by Skate Canada, the national skating standard. Each one is designed to teach skating skills in progressions, from simple to more complex, to build a strong foundation of conditioning and technique. This equips skaters with the skills necessary to succeed in all avenues of skating, whether hockey, ringette, figure skating, or simple recreational involvement.

“We are so excited to offer such diverse and comprehensive programming for our 60th anniversary season,” says Laurie Fryer, Collingwood Skating Club Registration Chair. “We really feel we have something for everyone.”

For more information, please contact Laurie Fryer, Collingwood Skating Club Registration Chair, at executive@collingwoodskatingclub.com.
