Pre-CanSkate
 

Prerequisites

Lesson Format

Skills

No previous skating experience required, recommended for children aged 3 and older. However, CSA approved helmets are mandatory.  Group Lessons (1 half-hour lesson per week).

Eight skills are required to pass in order to move on to CanSkate. Skaters receives a Pre CanSkate Ribbon.

  1. Balancing on two feet
  2. Falling down and getting up
  3. Moving forward
  4. Moving backward
  5. Marching around on spot
  6. Making snow
  7. Jumping on the spot
  8. Two foot twist on the spot

Skaters, regardless of age need to pass this in order to move onto CanSkate.

 

CanSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
All new skaters will be assessed by the coaching staff and placed into the most appropriate program within the first week. CSA approved helmets are mandatory. Group Lessons (1 hour, 1 night a week).

There are six stages with three fundamentals in each

1. Balance: Concentrating on most forward skills, pushing technique and edges

2. Control: Concentrating on most backward skills, stopping, and speed elements

3. Agility: Concentrating on most turning and jumping skills

Every skater needs to pass the 3 fundamentals (balance, control and agility) in order to pass a stage.

 Each time a fundamental is mastered, the skater is awarded a ribbon. Once all three in that level are mastered, a badge is awarded.

Advanced CanSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills
This program is invitation only and only offered to skaters that have passed Stage 4 of the CanSkate stream. CSA approved helmets are mandatory. Group Lessons (40 minutes with intermediate, one hour with CanSkate, two nights a week). Private lessons are also strongly recommended. Ice Dancing, free-skate, interpretive and synchronized skating skills are taught by this program.

 

STARSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
Intermediate: Skaters must have passed stage 6 of the CanSkate stream.
Senior: Skaters must have achieved 2 of the following: Dance - Star 5a, Freeskate - Star 3, Skills - Star 3 and/or be invited up at the coaches discretion.
Intermediate: Group lessons for free skate, dance, skills and stroking at specific times chosen with a club coach. Private lessons with a freelance coach are strongly recommended.
Senior: There is no group coaching offered at this level. Private coaching must be arranged between the skater/parent and the freelance coaches of your choice.

There are six stages with three fundamentals in each

Skating Skills: a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo. The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program. The movements are derived from former compulsory figures, free skating and ice dancing. The objective of the Skating Skills program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating - edge quality, control, power and speed.

Ice Dance: teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison. There are both traditional compulsory dances, and Creative Dances to challenge skaters' creativity, artistry and originality.

Free Skate: the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music.

Interpretive: to encourage and develop skaters' creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music, as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style. The program provides skaters with the opportunity to explore the performance aspect of skating without focusing on technical elements.

For each discipline, skaters participate in testing to progress through sequential levels.

Skating Skills: preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold.

Ice Dance: preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold, diamond. Note: The dances in the Star Skate Program can be tried in any order but a candidate must pass the required number of dances in a dance test before proceeding to the next level.

Free Skate: preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold. Note: Each test consists of two parts - elements in isolation and a free program

Interpretive: introductory, bronze, silver, gold. Note: The interpretive tests consist of skating to and interpreting a piece of music 2 - 3 minutes (+/- 10 seconds) in length. Skaters can take interpretive tests as individuals and/or as a couple (male/female, female/female or male/male)
